Dear Friends in Ankara – Please take caution today!
This message is being sent to alert U.S. citizens that the Embassy has received information that an anti-American demonstration of unknown size is expected to take place across the street from the Embassy at approximately 1:30 today. Expect a heavy police presence in the vicinity of the Embassy around that time. Traffic flow in the area may become disrupted.
The Department of State advises U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Turkey to be alert to the potential for violence, to avoid those areas where disturbances have occurred, and to avoid demonstrations and large gatherings. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.
Did anything go down? I’m hiding in the UK at the moment (read: on holiday). Also I’m not American. But no-one ever seems to be able to tell despite my smooth sultry Hugh Grant -esque accent.
Hi Tim, Sorry to reply late. I was actually out of town, so I don’t know. Recent protests though have been very mild. But always a good idea to heed the warning.
